Augie Meyers Cause Of Death, Obituary: Augie Meyers, Last Surviving Member of the Original Texas Tornados, Passes Away

It is with profound respect and admiration that we honor the life and enduring legacy of Augie Meyers, an American musician, songwriter, record producer, and record label owner whose contributions have left an indelible mark on both Texas and global music. Born in San Antonio, Texas, Augie emerged as a pioneering talent in the early 1960s, co-founding the influential Sir Douglas Quintet with Doug Sahm. His signature Vox organ sound became a defining element of the group’s music, heard on classics such as “She’s About a Mover” (1964), “Mendocino” (1969), and “Nuevo Laredo” (1970), leaving a lasting imprint on rock and Tex-Mex music.

In the 1990s, Augie continued to shape the musical landscape as a founding member of the celebrated supergroup Texas Tornados, alongside Doug Sahm, Flaco Jiménez, and Freddy Fender. The group’s innovative blend of rock, country, and Tejano music resonated with audiences worldwide, and Augie’s artistry played a central role in defining its unique sound.

Beyond performance, Augie was a highly sought-after studio musician, contributing to recordings by Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Tom Jones, John P. Hammond, Raul Malo, and Doug Sahm. His versatility and expertise enriched the work of countless artists, reflecting a career dedicated to musical excellence.

Augie also nurtured other artists through his entrepreneurial ventures, founding record labels such as the Texas Re-Cord Company, Superbeet Records, White Boy Records, and El Sendero, demonstrating his commitment to promoting Texas music culture.

As of July 2025, he remained the only surviving member of the original Texas Tornados lineup, a testament to a life devoted to music and creativity.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Augie Meyers’ family, friends, collaborators, and fans. His influence as a musician, producer, and mentor will continue to inspire generations of artists. Augie’s legacy is a testament to the power of passion, talent, and dedication, and his contributions to music will be remembered and celebrated for years to come. May he rest in peace, honored for his extraordinary impact on the world of music.
