It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the recent challenges facing communities across southwest Michigan. In addition to the physical and emotional impact of the recent tornado outbreak, Edwardsburg Public Schools are mourning the tragic loss of a beloved student, Silas Anderson. Silas was a valued member of the Edwardsburg school community, remembered for his kindness, energy, and the positive influence he had on his peers. His passing is a profound loss, and thoughts and condolences go out to his family, friends, and all who were touched by his life.
To support students and staff during this difficult time, Edwardsburg Public Schools have confirmed that classes will remain open, with additional counseling services and trained support staff available throughout the school day. These resources are designed to help the community process grief, provide emotional support, and ensure that anyone in need has access to professional guidance. The district’s commitment reflects the care and compassion that defined Silas’s presence within the school, and underscores the importance of supporting students in the aftermath of tragedy.
Meanwhile, nearby Union City has also been deeply affected by the recent tornado outbreak. Union City Community Schools announced the closure of schools on Monday to allow the community to focus on recovery and rebuilding. Despite the closure, transportation remains available for students attending programs at the Branch Area Careers Center (CACC) and Barry County Area Math and Science Center (BCAMSC). Union City High School has been transformed into a resource center for residents affected by the storms, operating daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. to provide assistance to individuals and families in need.
The district is also providing both lunch and dinner at the high school for the foreseeable future, offering essential support to community members navigating the aftermath of the disaster. Operations are being managed on a day-to-day basis as officials assess ongoing needs and ensure residents receive care and resources.
Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to the families of Silas Anderson and to all those impacted by the tornado outbreak in Edwardsburg, Union City, and surrounding areas. These communities have demonstrated incredible resilience and compassion, and the support systems put in place—both in schools and throughout the region—are a testament to the collective commitment to care for one another. During this challenging time, may all affected find comfort, strength, and hope, and may Silas’s memory be honored in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
